With the refugee crisis escalating throughout Brazil, we wanted to share a true story that showed how the power of language can make any place feel a little more like home.

After a bunch of digging, we found Mariam, a Georgian refugee who fled to Rio when she was four years old, and Kreste, an 8 year old Syrian refugee who had just arrived.

Using Google Translate, Mariam was able to reach across the language divide to let Kreste know she's not alone.

To extend this message of support and belonging, we partnered with Brazilian street artists to translate messages of love into a variety of languages, then featured them in the International airport so that visitors and refugees from all over the world would feel welcome upon arrival.
